Tawaf - circumambulating the Ka'bah seven times anticlockwise - is the most iconic act of Hajj and Umrah. You will perform it multiple times during your pilgrimage: once as part of Umrah (Tawaf al-Umrah), once after returning from Arafat on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah (Tawaf al-Ifadah, which is a pillar of Hajj), and once before leaving Makkah (Tawaf al-Wada'). Here is how to perform it correctly.
Before You Begin
- Be in a state of wudu (ritual ablution). Tawaf requires the same purity as prayer. If your wudu breaks during Tawaf, you must renew it and resume from the circuit you were on.
- For men performing Tawaf al-Umrah or Tawaf al-Qudum: Uncover your right shoulder (idtiba' - tuck the upper Ihram cloth under your right arm). This is Sunnah for these specific Tawafs only.
- Set your intention (niyyah) silently in your heart for the specific Tawaf you are performing.
The Seven Circuits
- Start at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad). The corner is marked by a green light on the wall of the Masjid. Face the stone, raise your right hand toward it, say "Bismillah, Allahu Akbar," and begin walking anticlockwise with the Ka'bah on your left.
- Walk at a steady pace. In the first three circuits of Tawaf al-Umrah/al-Qudum, men should walk briskly (raml) - a quick, short-stepped pace. The remaining four circuits are at normal walking speed. Women walk normally throughout.
- Each circuit begins and ends at the Black Stone. Each time you pass it, face it, raise your right hand, and say "Allahu Akbar." Touching or kissing the stone is Sunnah but not obligatory - if the crowd makes it impossible, gesturing from a distance is perfectly valid.
- At the Yemeni Corner (Rukn al-Yamani): Touch it with your right hand if you can reach it without pushing. Between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone, recite: "Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah wa qina adhab an-nar" (Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire - Quran 2:201).
- Complete all seven circuits without stopping (unless wudu breaks). There is no specific dua for each circuit - make any dua you wish, recite Quran, or make dhikr. Speak to Allah in your own language.
After Tawaf
- Pray two rakaat behind Maqam Ibrahim (the Station of Ibrahim). If the area is too crowded, pray them anywhere in the Masjid - proximity to the Maqam is Sunnah, not obligatory.
- Drink Zamzam water. Zamzam coolers are placed throughout the mosque.
- Proceed to Sa'i (walking between Safa and Marwah) if this Tawaf is followed by Sa'i (as in Umrah or Hajj Tamattu').
Practical Tips for Handling Crowds
Tawaf at the Ka'bah during Hajj season involves some of the densest crowds on Earth. These strategies make it manageable:
- Use the upper floors or the roof. The ground floor near the Ka'bah is the most crowded. The first and second floors, and especially the roof level, offer much more space. Your Tawaf is equally valid from any level.
- Go at off-peak times. The quietest periods are typically between midnight and Fajr, and during the mid-afternoon heat when most pilgrims rest. Immediately after Isha and during Jumuah (Friday) are the most crowded.
- Stay in the outer lanes. Being close to the Ka'bah is emotionally moving but practically dangerous in extreme crowds. The outer circuits are wider and faster. The reward is the same regardless of distance.
- Do not push. If someone pushes you, absorb it with patience. Pushing back creates chain reactions that can lead to crushing injuries. Hajj is an exercise in sabr.
- Keep your group together by holding hands or using coloured wristbands. Agree on a meeting point outside the Tawaf area in case you get separated.
Common Tawaf Mistakes
- Starting from the wrong point. Each circuit must begin and end at the Black Stone line (marked by the green light). Starting elsewhere invalidates that circuit.
- Walking clockwise. Tawaf is always anticlockwise. If you realise you are going the wrong way, correct immediately.
- Excessive focus on touching the Black Stone. Pushing through crowds to physically touch or kiss it is not worth injuring yourself or others. A raised hand and "Allahu Akbar" from any distance is accepted by all scholars.
- Talking, joking, or using your phone. Tawaf should be treated with the focus and reverence of prayer. Save conversations and selfies for after you finish.
