The Makkah Route Initiative is transforming how pilgrims travel to Saudi Arabia for Hajj 2026, with smart baggage technology and pre-departure immigration clearance eliminating some of the most stressful parts of the journey. Turkish pilgrims are among the latest beneficiaries, with Saudi personnel stationed at Istanbul Airport completing all entry procedures before flights depart.

How the Smart Baggage System Works

At the heart of the initiative is a smart baggage coding system operated by Saudi Post. Each pilgrim's luggage is electronically tagged at the departure airport and linked to their personal data and accommodation details in Saudi Arabia. The bags are sorted, loaded onto coordinated buses, and delivered directly to the pilgrim's residence in Makkah or Madinah.

This means pilgrims no longer need to collect luggage on arrival, wait at carousels, or struggle with heavy bags while navigating an unfamiliar airport. They can proceed directly from the aircraft to their transport and onward to their hotel.

According to Arab News, pilgrims who used the service reported that it "significantly reduced waiting times and physical strain, enabling them to proceed directly to their accommodations and focus on their rituals."

Pre-Departure Immigration Clearance

Qualified Saudi personnel - including passport specialists, logistics coordinators, and IT staff - are stationed at participating departure airports. They complete all Saudi entry procedures before pilgrims board their flights, including:

  • Passport verification and biometric data collection
  • Visa validation
  • Health certificate checks
  • Baggage tagging and coding

This eliminates the notoriously long immigration queues at Jeddah and Madinah airports, where wait times during peak Hajj arrivals can stretch to 3 hours or more.

Which Countries Participate

The Makkah Route Initiative currently operates from airports in several countries including Turkey, Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Not all departure airports within these countries are included - the service operates from specific terminals with Saudi staffing.

If your Hajj operator is using a Makkah Route-enabled flight, you will be informed in advance. The process typically takes place in a dedicated hall at the departure airport several hours before your flight.

What Pilgrims Should Know

If you are travelling on a Makkah Route flight, ensure your passport and all documentation are ready well before arriving at the airport. The pre-clearance process requires time, and organisers ask pilgrims to arrive earlier than a standard flight. Pack a small carry-on with essentials (medication, ihram, phone charger) separate from your checked luggage, since your main bags will be delivered to your accommodation and may not be available for several hours after arrival.

For pilgrims not on Makkah Route flights, the standard arrival process at Saudi airports remains in place - immigration on arrival, baggage collection, then onward transfer.
