The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah is deploying smart sensor systems linked to the Nusuk card in Mina for the first time during Hajj 2026. The technology uses real-time data to manage the movement of over 2 million pilgrims through one of the most congested ritual sites.

What the Technology Does

The smart sensors work in conjunction with each pilgrim's Nusuk card - the mandatory identification issued to all Hajj participants. As pilgrims move through Mina's tent city and surrounding areas, sensors track crowd density and flow patterns in real time. This data feeds into a central system that helps authorities:

  • Monitor crowd density in specific zones and corridors
  • Direct pilgrim flow to prevent dangerous bottlenecks
  • Identify lost pilgrims using their card data
  • Control access to camps and transportation
  • Coordinate movement between sites (Mina, Arafah, Muzdalifah, Jamarat)

Field teams can access accurate pilgrim information instantly, helping them assist anyone who is lost, injured, or separated from their group.

The Nusuk Card System

The Nusuk card is mandatory for entry to Makkah, the Grand Mosque, all sacred sites, and Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah. It is available in both physical (paper) and digital formats, accessible through the Nusuk app.

During the 1446 Hijri season (2025), Saudi authorities distributed over 1.6 million Nusuk cards to pilgrims plus 90,000 cards to workers serving at the holy sites. The 2026 season is expected to see similar or higher numbers.

Why This Matters

Crowd management in Mina has historically been one of the greatest logistical challenges of Hajj. The tent city accommodates the entire pilgrim population simultaneously during the days of Tashreeq (11th-13th Dhul Hijjah), and the daily walk to the Jamarat for the stoning ritual creates massive pedestrian flows through narrow corridors.

Previous Hajj seasons have seen dangerous crowd surges, particularly around the Jamarat Bridge. The smart sensor system aims to prevent such incidents by providing authorities with real-time visibility into crowd movements before dangerous density levels are reached.

What Pilgrims Should Do

Ensure you have your Nusuk card (physical or digital) at all times during Hajj. Without it, you will not be permitted to enter the sacred sites. Keep your phone charged if relying on the digital version. If you become separated from your group, approach any uniformed official - the sensor system means they can quickly identify who you are, which camp you belong to, and help reunite you with your group leader.
