Saudi Arabia has announced a new minimum age requirement for Hajj 2026, barring any pilgrim under the age of 15 from travelling to the Kingdom for the pilgrimage. The directive, confirmed on May 2, takes effect from 12:00am on May 3, 2026.
What the New Rule Means
The age threshold is calculated as of May 27, 2026 (9 Dhul Hijjah 1447 AH - the Day of Arafah). Any pilgrim who will not have turned 15 by that date is prohibited from boarding flights to Saudi Arabia for Hajj. Visas already issued for those under 15 are considered cancelled.
According to reports, the directive was conveyed during direct communication between Pakistan's Director General of Hajj and a representative of Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. Pakistan's Ministry of Religious Affairs has confirmed the measure applies to all its outbound pilgrims.
Refunds for Affected Families
Saudi officials have assured full refunds for all affected pilgrims whose bookings are now invalid due to the age restriction. Families who had planned to take children under 15 on Hajj will need to make alternative arrangements or cancel entirely.
Pakistan's Airports Authority has warned that underage pilgrims will not be permitted to board any flight departing for Saudi Arabia, reinforcing that enforcement begins at the point of departure rather than on arrival.
Context and Timing
The announcement comes as Hajj flights are already well underway. Pakistan's Route to Makkah programme began departures on April 19, 2026, and is expected to facilitate over 95,000 Pakistani pilgrims this season. The late timing of the announcement - just weeks before the Hajj rites - has raised concerns among families who may have already completed their preparations.
The restriction appears to apply universally to all nationalities, though Pakistan is the first country to publicly confirm implementation. Pilgrims from other countries should check with their respective Hajj authorities for confirmation.
What Pilgrims Should Do
If you have a child under 15 registered for Hajj 2026, contact your tour operator or national Hajj authority immediately to arrange a refund. Do not proceed to the airport with an underage pilgrim as they will be denied boarding. Those affected should retain all booking documentation to facilitate the refund process.
