Staying Connected in Saudi Arabia

Having a working phone with mobile data is extremely useful during Hajj and Umrah - for navigation, staying in contact with your group, and using essential apps like Nusuk and Uber. Saudi Arabia has excellent 4G/5G coverage in Makkah, Madinah, and Jeddah.

eSIMs - The Best Option for Pilgrims

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM that you download and activate before you even leave home. For pilgrims, this is a game-changer - the moment your plane lands in Jeddah or Madinah, you have immediate internet access. No queuing at airport counters, no passport registration hassle, no stress trying to find your transfer or contact your group while disconnected.

Why eSIMs are ideal for pilgrims: Many pilgrims report the most stressful moment of their journey is arriving at the airport with no phone connectivity - unable to call their hotel, contact their group leader, or use maps to find their transport. An eSIM eliminates this problem entirely. Install it at home, and you are connected the instant you land.

How eSIMs Work

  • Check your phone supports eSIM (most phones from 2019 onwards do - iPhone XR and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, Google Pixel 3 and later)
  • Purchase and download the eSIM profile via an app before you travel
  • The eSIM activates automatically when you arrive in Saudi Arabia - no physical SIM swap needed
  • Your regular home SIM stays in place, so you can still receive calls and texts on your normal number
  • Most eSIMs are data-only - use WhatsApp, FaceTime, or similar apps for voice and video calls

Top 3 Recommended eSIMs for Hajj & Umrah

Based on pilgrim experiences and real-world testing in Makkah and Madinah, these are the best options:

1. Airalo (Red Sand Package) - Best Overall

Network: Zain Saudi Arabia (4G/5G)
Pricing: 1 GB / 7 days from $5 • 5 GB / 30 days ~$16 • 10 GB / 30 days ~$27 • 20 GB / 15 days $40

  • Most widely recommended by pilgrims on travel forums and Reddit
  • Proven track record during Hajj seasons - confirmed working in Makkah, Madinah, and Jeddah
  • Easy activation via the Airalo app - install before travel, activate on landing
  • Top-ups available without losing remaining validity
  • 5G access in urban areas including around the Haramain

Best for: Most pilgrims. The 10 GB plan ($27) covers a typical 2-week Umrah trip comfortably. For Hajj, consider the 20 GB ($40) plan.

2. STC eSIM (via mySTC App) - Best Coverage in the Haram

Network: STC (Saudi Arabia’s largest operator)
Pricing: Visitor packages from SAR 70 (~$19) to SAR 115 (~$31)

  • Best signal quality inside Masjid al-Haram - confirmed by multiple pilgrims
  • Largest 5G network in Saudi Arabia with the widest coverage
  • Includes voice calling (local and international minutes)
  • Can be activated via mySTC app with biometric verification

Best for: Pilgrims who prioritise reliability inside the Haram, or those who need traditional voice calling (not just WhatsApp).

Note: Activation requires Absher platform verification, which can be more complex for first-time visitors. If this seems daunting, go with Airalo instead.

3. Jetpac - Best Budget Option

Network: Zain 5G
Pricing: 1 GB / 4 days ~$1 • 3 GB / 15 days ~$7 • 5 GB / 30 days ~$11 • 10 GB / 30 days ~$21

  • Cheapest eSIM option available for Saudi Arabia
  • Includes a free VPN - useful for unrestricted WhatsApp and video calling
  • Same reliable Zain network as Airalo at a lower price
  • Simple app-based setup

Best for: Budget-conscious pilgrims, or those who want a secondary backup eSIM alongside their primary connection.

Essential eSIM Tips for Pilgrims

  • Install before you fly - download the eSIM profile at home on your hotel WiFi. Do not wait until the airport.
  • Do not delete and reinstall - if you have activation issues, restart your phone rather than deleting the eSIM profile (some profiles can only be installed once).
  • Buy more data than you think you need - network congestion during Hajj means pages reload and streams retry, consuming extra data.
  • Download offline maps before Mina/Arafat - regardless of your eSIM, networks in these areas become extremely congested with millions of pilgrims. Save Google Maps offline for the Makkah region.
  • Two-SIM strategy - experienced pilgrims carry one Airalo eSIM (Zain network) and one STC eSIM or physical SIM. If one network is congested, switch to the other. Most modern phones support two eSIMs simultaneously.

Important: eSIMs are data-only (except STC). For emergency voice calls to Saudi numbers (police, ambulance), you may still need a physical SIM or ask someone nearby for help. However, WhatsApp calling works perfectly over data for all normal communication.

Physical SIM Cards

If your phone does not support eSIM, or you prefer a physical SIM card with voice calling included, you can buy one on arrival. The three main Saudi providers all offer tourist SIM packages.

Saudi Mobile Providers

ProviderCoverageTourist SIM PriceNotes
STC (Al Jawal)Best overall~75-100 SARLargest network, best coverage in remote areas and during Hajj
MobilyVery good~60-90 SARCompetitive data packages, good coverage in cities
ZainGood~55-85 SAROften cheapest option, decent urban coverage

Buying a SIM Card

  • At the airport: All three providers have counters at Jeddah and Madinah airports. This is the easiest option - buy your SIM immediately on arrival. Queues can be long during Hajj season, so consider sending one member of your group to get SIMs while others collect luggage.
  • In the city: Provider shops and authorised dealers are everywhere in Makkah and Madinah. Shopping malls and the streets around the Haram have plenty of options.
  • Requirements: You need your passport to register a SIM card. This is a legal requirement in Saudi Arabia. The shopkeeper will scan your passport and activate the SIM on the spot.

Tip: STC offers special Hajj SIM packages during the season with generous data allowances (often 20-50 GB) and local calling minutes. These packages are designed for the typical Hajj duration of 2-3 weeks. Ask specifically for the Hajj package.

Data Plans and Packages

Typical tourist SIM packages include:

  • Basic (50-75 SAR): 10-15 GB data, valid for 30 days, some local minutes
  • Standard (100-120 SAR): 25-40 GB data, valid for 30 days, unlimited local calls
  • Premium (150+ SAR): 50+ GB or unlimited data, ideal for longer stays

You can top up data through the provider’s app (MySTC, Mobily App, Zain App) or at recharge stations in supermarkets and convenience stores.

WiFi Availability

  • Hotels: Almost all hotels offer free WiFi, though speeds vary. Budget hotels near the Haram may have slower connections due to demand.
  • Masjid al-Haram (Makkah): Free WiFi is available inside the mosque, though it can be very slow during peak times due to the enormous number of users.
  • Masjid an-Nabawi (Madinah): Free WiFi is also available. Coverage and speed are generally better than in Makkah’s Haram.
  • Public places: Many restaurants, cafes, and shopping centres offer free WiFi.

During Hajj days (8th-13th Dhul Hijjah): Mobile networks in Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah become extremely congested. Calls and data may be very slow or intermittent. Download offline maps beforehand and agree on a physical meeting point with your group in case you lose phone contact.
