Transport in Saudi Arabia

Getting between Makkah, Madinah, and Jeddah - and moving around within these cities - is straightforward once you know your options. Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in transport infrastructure for pilgrims.

Haramain High-Speed Rail

The Haramain High-Speed Railway (HHR) connects Makkah, Jeddah, King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC), and Madinah. This is the best way to travel between the two Holy Cities:

  • Journey time: Makkah to Madinah takes approximately 2 hours 10 minutes (with Jeddah stop).
  • Speed: Trains travel at up to 300 km/h.
  • Stations: Makkah station (Al Rusaifah district, about 7 km from Haram), Jeddah (at the airport), KAEC, and Madinah (Knowledge Economic City, about 10 km from the Prophet’s Mosque).
  • Booking: Tickets can be booked via the SAR (Saudi Arabia Railways) app or website (sar.com.sa). Book in advance during peak Umrah and Hajj seasons as trains fill up.
  • Classes: Economy and Business class available. Economy is comfortable and affordable (typically 150-250 SAR Makkah to Madinah).

Tip: The Makkah and Madinah train stations are outside the city centre. You will need a taxi or Uber to get to/from the station. Factor this into your travel time and budget.

Taxis, Uber & Careem

Uber and Careem (a Middle Eastern ride-hailing app acquired by Uber) both operate in Makkah, Madinah, and Jeddah. They are reliable, air-conditioned, and you know the fare upfront - no haggling required.

  • Download both apps before you arrive and add a payment method.
  • During Hajj season, surge pricing applies and it can be difficult to find rides in Mina/Arafat.
  • Traditional white taxis are also available. Agree on the fare before getting in, or insist on the meter.
  • A taxi from Jeddah airport to Makkah costs approximately 200-300 SAR (about 1.5 hours).

Buses

  • SAPTCO: The Saudi public transport company operates intercity buses between major cities. Buses are air-conditioned and affordable (Jeddah to Makkah from ~30 SAR). Book at saptco.com.sa.
  • Hajj buses: During Hajj, special bus services transport pilgrims between Makkah, Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah. These are usually arranged through your Hajj tour operator and are included in your package.

Mashair Railway (Hajj Only)

The Mashair Railway operates exclusively during the days of Hajj, connecting Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah. It is a light metro system that helps reduce road congestion during the massive movement of pilgrims. Your tour operator will arrange access if it is part of your transport plan. Not all pilgrims use it - many travel by bus or on foot.

Walking Distances

RouteDistanceWalking Time
Mina to Arafat~10 km2-3 hours
Arafat to Muzdalifah~9 km2-3 hours
Muzdalifah to Mina~3 km45-60 minutes
Mina to Masjid al-Haram~5 km1-1.5 hours

Many pilgrims walk part or all of these routes. During Hajj, the roads between these sites are pedestrianised. Wear comfortable shoes and start walks during cooler hours if possible.
