Saudi Arabia has expanded capacity on the Haramain High-Speed Railway to more than 2.21 million seats, part of a broader push to move pilgrims between the holy cities faster and more reliably. The increase, reported through official Saudi channels, adds over 210,000 seats compared with the same period a year earlier.
The railway links Makkah, Madinah, and Jeddah, and has become a backbone of pilgrim movement during peak seasons. With demand for Umrah and Hajj travel climbing, authorities have leaned heavily on rail to relieve pressure on roads.
One of the World's Fastest Networks
The Haramain High-Speed Railway operates at speeds of up to 300 kilometres per hour, placing it among the fastest electric rail networks in the world. That speed cuts the journey between Makkah and Madinah to a few hours, a trip that once took far longer by road.
Over a recent peak window, authorities operated more than 5,300 train trips, providing the expanded seat capacity. The additional journeys are intended to absorb surges in demand without leaving pilgrims stranded or forcing long waits.
For pilgrims, the railway offers a comfortable, air-conditioned alternative to bus travel across the desert, with dedicated stations serving Makkah, Madinah, Jeddah, and King Abdulaziz International Airport.
An Integrated Transport Plan
The rail expansion sits within a wider shift toward integrated transport. Saudi Arabia has moved to a model that connects air, rail, bus, and on-the-ground logistics under a single movement plan.
Each mode is coordinated through central control centres that monitor traffic in real time.
