Authorities in Madinah have banned motorcycles from Quba Street, one of the city's main routes leading to the historic Masjid Quba. A new sign marking the road as off-limits to motorcycle traffic has been installed as part of traffic control measures in the area, meaning visitors and residents must now use alternative transport along that stretch.

The change affects a route many pilgrims use during their stay in Madinah. Masjid Quba draws a steady flow of visitors, and easing congestion and improving safety on the approach roads has become a priority as numbers grow.

The newly installed sign prohibits motorcycles from travelling on Quba Street. Officials have not framed this as a temporary measure, and the restriction applies to the road that carries visitors toward the mosque.

Motorcyclists, including delivery riders who are a common sight on the city's streets, will need to take other routes. Pilgrims who had planned to reach the mosque by motorcycle taxi or similar services should now expect to walk the final stretch or use permitted vehicles and public transport instead.

Why Masjid Quba matters

Masjid Quba holds a special place for visitors to Madinah. It is widely regarded as the first mosque built in Islamic history, established on the outskirts of the city in the earliest days after the Prophet's migration.

Its virtue is well attested. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said that whoever purifies himself in his house, then comes to the mosque of Quba and prays in it, will have a reward like that of an Umrah, as narrated in Sunan Ibn Majah (1412). That reward encourages many pilgrims to make the short journey during their time in Madinah, which is precisely why keeping the approach safe and orderly matters.
