As temperatures in Makkah climb past 40 degrees Celsius this summer, one of the world's largest cooling systems is working around the clock to keep worshippers comfortable inside the Grand Mosque. The integrated system holds the interior between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius, even during peak crowds.
The scale of the engineering is striking. The system carries a capacity of about 155,000 refrigeration tons and cools nearly 1.5 million square metres, distributing chilled air evenly across prayer areas, courtyards and service facilities used by Umrah pilgrims and worshippers alike.
How the system works
The cooling network does more than lower the temperature. It also treats and purifies the air, reaching a filtration efficiency of up to 95 per cent. Advanced air-handling technology helps maintain a clean and healthy environment for the millions who pass through the mosque each year.
Chilled water is produced at a central plant and pumped through an extensive network to reach every corner of the complex. This centralised approach allows engineers to manage the entire mosque climate from one point, adjusting output as crowd sizes shift through the day and night.
The result is a consistent, comfortable environment inside the mosque even when the sun pushes outdoor temperatures to dangerous levels. For pilgrims performing Tawaf and lengthy prayers, that stability matters for both comfort and safety.
Part of a larger expansion
The cooling upgrade sits within the wider Saudi expansion of the Grand Mosque. As part of that work, cooling capacity across the site has been boosted dramatically, with newer sections designed to maintain a comfortable atmosphere throughout the year.
Engineers have also focused on efficiency. Variable-speed drive technology helps cut annual energy consumption by around 30 per cent while reducing noise, an important consideration in a space devoted to prayer and reflection. The expansion spans well over a million square metres and adds significant capacity for future seasons.
The investment reflects a broader Saudi effort to protect pilgrims from extreme heat, which has been a serious concern during summer Hajj and Umrah seasons. Cooling stations, shaded walkways and misting systems around the holy sites work alongside the mosque's internal system to reduce the risk of heat illness.
What it means for pilgrims
For those travelling this summer, the cooling system offers meaningful relief, but it does not remove the need for personal care. Pilgrims should still plan outdoor movement for the cooler hours, drink plenty of water and rest when needed. The controlled climate inside the mosque is a good place to recover between rituals.
Elderly pilgrims and those with health conditions benefit most from staying within the cooled areas during the hottest part of the day. Combined with the Kingdom's outdoor cooling stations, the system gives pilgrims a far safer environment than the harsh summer conditions outside would otherwise allow.
